About Summit Fever
Hi, I’m Mike.
Say the word “mountains” around me and I react the way a dog does when you say “walk.” Before you can grab the keys, I’ve got my pack on and I’m spinning in circles.
I was born in Denver and grew up camping all over Colorado. As a teenager I spent a lot of time on the trails around Boulder. But I didn’t climb my first real mountain until 2022. It was Grays Peak, and honestly, I had no idea what I was doing.
I didn’t know what the road was like, so I ended up parking at the very bottom and walking it. I didn’t pack enough snacks. I almost ran out of water. I had no gloves for the cold up top and no real rain gear, I was wearing sweatpants for crying out loud. But somewhere on that climb, something changed. Standing on top felt almost unreal, and I was hooked from that day on.
Then in 2023, my whole life was turned upside down. A near-death accident at work left me with third-degree burns over 43% of my body. The year that followed was the hardest of my life. Through the pain, the hospital and the long recovery, one thing kept me going: the mountains. I lay there picturing the biggest peaks Colorado has to offer, and I made myself a promise that I would climb every one of them.
I’m keeping that promise.
Since then I’ve stood on more than 100 summits, including 47 of Colorado’s 14ers, and I’m still going.
The mountains rebuilt me physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. They gave me my life back. That’s why I built Summit Fever. I wanted a place that’s free for everyone, whether you’re a seasoned alpinist or a weekend warrior just dipping your toes in. Everything here is meant to help you get ready, stay safe and fall in love with these mountains the way I did, without making the mistakes I made.
Wherever you are on your journey, I’m cheering for you. I hope this site becomes a trusted friend you come back to again and again, and I hope these mountains give you as much as they’ve given me.
See you on the trail.
— Mike
