Colorado 13er · North Ridge from the Buckskin Pass Trail

Overview

UN 13,048 is an easy 13er half a mile south of Buckskin Pass, above Maroon Lake. You follow the busy Crater Lake and Buckskin Pass trails, leave the trail at a switchback near 12,080 feet, and climb grass and a short ramp onto the north ridge.

It is Class 2, with one quick move over an 8-foot slab at the first cliff band and a little more scrambling near the top.

The round trip is about 8.4 miles with 3,470 feet of gain when paired with Buckskin Benchmark across the pass. Getting to Maroon Lake in summer takes a parking reservation or the shuttle bus.

Getting to the trailhead

Trailhead

Maroon Lake

Find it on a map

From the roundabout on Highway 82 just west of Aspen, take Maroon Creek Road (County Road 13) south toward Aspen Highlands and Maroon Lake. About 4.7 miles in is the entrance station, where you pay a fee.

In summer the road is limited: you need a parking reservation, often made months ahead, or you ride the shuttle bus from the Aspen Highlands lot. Check the White River National Forest website for this year's rules before you go. There is no camping at Maroon Lake. Silver Bar, Silver Bell and Silver Queen campgrounds along the road are small, reservable and usually full.

Less traffic, less margin

This describes the route on a dry summer day. Most 13ers see few people, so there may be no one along behind you. Check recent conditions the week you go, carry a map, tell someone your plan, and turn around when the day tells you to.
