Colorado 13er · East Slopes from St. Mary's Glacier

Overview

James Peak rises above St. Mary's Glacier, west of Idaho Springs. The route follows the popular trail to St. Mary's Lake, climbs beside the permanent snowfield, crosses a broad flat, and follows a good trail up the east slopes to the summit, past views of Loch Lomond.

It is Class 2 on trail, with snow along the glacier even in late summer. Stay back from the cliff on your right near the top.

The round trip is about 8.1 miles with 2,900 feet of gain.

Less traffic, less margin

This describes the route on a dry summer day. Most 13ers see few people, so there may be no one along behind you. Check recent conditions the week you go, carry a map, tell someone your plan, and turn around when the day tells you to.
