Colorado 13er · Southwest Face from Wild Cherry Creek

Overview

Mount Owen is on the west side of the northern Sangre, above Cherry and Cotton lakes. New mapping added 21 feet to its height. The approach from the San Luis Valley is on a good trail from a car-friendly trailhead.

The Wild Cherry Creek trail climbs 3.5 miles through aspen and forest to an open meadow. Then a relentlessly steep grass and tundra slope leads 1,000-plus feet to the west ridge, and a boulder hop takes you to the top. It is Class 2.

The round trip is about 10 miles with 4,900 feet of gain.

Less traffic, less margin

This describes the route on a dry summer day. Most 13ers see few people, so there may be no one along behind you. Check recent conditions the week you go, carry a map, tell someone your plan, and turn around when the day tells you to.
