Is it right for you?

Bull Hill is said to be the highest 'hill' in Colorado, west of Mount Elbert, with an outstanding view of Elbert and La Plata Peak. You'll likely have it to yourself.

A trail and old mining road climb Echo Canyon past the Last Chance and Golden Fleece mines. A short, steeper rocky slope leads to the grassy south ridge. It is Class 2 and family friendly; one family took a leisurely seven hours.

The round trip is about 7.4 miles with 3,775 feet of gain. A Black Cloud Creek approach is another option.

Getting there

Trailhead

Echo Canyon

Find it on a map

From US 24 south of Leadville, take Highway 82 west toward Twin Lakes roughly 12.5 miles, then turn right on an unmarked dirt road; slow down, it's easy to miss. Parking for two cars is on the left within 100 yards.

A 4WD can go about 150 yards farther up the old road to a pull-off with room for a couple more.
