Colorado 13er · Northwest Ridge from Independence Pass

Overview

Mountain Boy Peak sits on the Continental Divide, just over 3 miles south of Independence Pass. Mountain Boy Park and Mountain Boy Gulch, below it to the north, gave it its name.

It is an easy Class 2 ridge walk over three high points, the last being unranked Igloo Peak. The only tricky bit is getting off Igloo Peak: its east ridge is sharp and steep, so drop a little south of it through broken rock. Mountain goats often rest near the summit; give them room.

The round trip is about 7 miles with 1,880 feet of gain. It's a good early-summer climb.

Independence Pass

Find it on a map

Independence Pass is on Highway 82, about 20 miles east of Aspen. From the east, leave US 24 at the Twin Lakes turnoff between Leadville and Buena Vista and drive west about 24 miles, past Twin Lakes, over the top.

The paved lot at the top of the pass (12,093 feet) has restrooms and fills with sightseers on summer days. Highway 82 over the pass is closed in winter, usually from early November to late May.

Less traffic, less margin

This describes the route on a dry summer day. Most 13ers see few people, so there may be no one along behind you. Check recent conditions the week you go, carry a map, tell someone your plan, and turn around when the day tells you to.
