Alternate route · West Ridge

Overview

The West Ridge of Quandary Peak is a Class 3 scramble that starts at Blue Lakes, south of Breckenridge. It climbs through basins above the lake to the west ridge, then follows the ridge east to the summit with several scrambling steps. The hardest part is a steep rock wall near the top.

It suits hikers with Class 3 experience who want more than the busy standard trail on the east ridge. The route is short, about 4 miles round trip with roughly 2,650 feet of gain, but the ridge is slow. There is real exposure in spots and some loose rock. Route-finding matters in the basin and on the ridge.

Plan on 5 to 7 hours car to car. Many people come down a different way, by the Cristo Couloir (South Gully) back toward the Blue Lakes area, so they do not have to downclimb the ridge.

Plan of the day

Start by

By 5:30 a.m. You are above treeline the whole day.

Turnaround

If you are not on the west ridge near 13,400 feet by 9:30 a.m., or clouds are building, turn around. Once on the ridge, retreat is slow.

Crux

A steep rock wall on the ridge shortly before the summit. You downclimb a little to reach its base, then climb up the middle of it. The top part is steep rock.

Route-finding

Moderate. Find the right trail leaving the lake, as several side paths branch off. In the upper basin, stay on the left side and do not head for the ridge too early. On the ridge, look ahead for the easiest line around each bump.

Water

Blue Lakes is the only sure water. Carry 2 to 3 liters and filter anything you collect.

Getting to the trailhead

Blue Lakes

Find it on a map

Drive south from Breckenridge on Colorado 9 for about 8 miles. Where the highway makes a sharp bend, turn west onto the Blue Lakes road (road 850). The road climbs west up the valley.

About 1.4 miles in, you may find a closed gate. The water utility that owns the dam has shut the upper road at times. If the gate is closed, park nearby without blocking it and walk the last three-quarters of a mile or so of road to the dam. The lot at the top is small and fills early on summer weekends.

Conditions change the route

This describes the route in its usual season. Distances and elevations are close estimates for planning. Snow, ice, rockfall, a washed-out road or an afternoon storm can make it a very different climb. Check recent conditions the week you go and turn around when the day tells you to.
